Six Lawn and Garden Tips To Save Water

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Love spending time outside working on your lawn or in your garden? Then you know how much care is needed to bring out the best of your plants or grass. But that doesn’t mean you have to waste water doing it. Here are six ideas to help you save water and money while growing your garden.

  1. End the leaks.
6,000 gallons. That’s how much water can be wasted over the course of a year if your hose has a 1/32” diameter leak. Now imagine if you have multiple leaks! So check out your hoses and do a leak inspection.

  2. Let it rain — into a barrel.
Free from many salts and chemicals, collecting rainwater in a rain barrel is a great, low-cost way to keep your plants and your wallet happy.

  3. Grow drought-resistant plants.
Planning your garden or yard carefully can significantly affect your water consumption. White fir, sage, and many other plants thrive in low water conditions, so ask your local nursery or landscape professional which plants do well in your area.

  4. Mulch it up!
Keep your plants’ root zone moist and cool by adding a thick layer of mulch over the soil. Wood chips, shredded bark, and other organic mulches can help the soil over time.

  5. Keep your grass long(er).
Help shade the soil, capture moisture, and prevent evaporation by keeping your grass at the highest recommended length, which is around two inches for most types of grass.

  6. Water what matters — the soil.
Water your plants at the root zone to keep evaporation to a minimum. By keeping water off your plants’ leaves, you’ll help control such things as sunscald and fungal disease.

Grow healthier plants with less water waste. Making small changes to how you water your lawn or garden can greatly affect your yard — and your wallet.
